
It’s here! At long last, after much postponement, so many hours of work its unbelievable, incredible angst, and a stubborn diligence bordering on insanity, the 2nd edition of When Butches Cry has been born.
When Butches Cry was written following my 2015 GCLS win for Riding the Rainbow. The wonderful people at Sapphire Books Publishing published it in 2017 and entered it in the GCLS awards, where it became a finalist.
In the last six years many, many things have happened. Too many and too personal to share with you. Suffice it to say I’ve grown as an author, been back to the island of Terceira three times since it first published, and gathered some fascinating tidbits about the then/there group of young lesbians I’ve dubbed the Troublemakers.
I also wrote the sequel and to my surprise discovered a third one in me as well. I knew so much more by the time I wrote them they made the original pale in comparison. And, kicking and screaming all the way, I finally entered the 21st century myself, admitting that social media, branding, and self-promotion were the only ways to get read. After such a long wait between books, the series needed a fresh launch.
I rewrote the book, updating my storytelling, adding details that enhanced the story, and tightening up the language. It’s the exact same story, I’ve just gotten better at telling it. With help from my granddaughter, I’ve learned some basics of modern social media promotion, and the concept of branding (which for some reason I couldn’t wrap my head around) suddenly made sense.
